Colorhythm Risa: Performance(,) Art

Colorhythm RisaWhat do you get when you mix together one large canvas, bottles of paint, music with throbbing beats, street dance, and caricature drawings?

The resulting performance defies all definitions so we have no other choice but to call it “Colorhythm”. Coming to the HYPER Theatre stage this summer, it is the brainchild of “Colorhythm Risa”, a talented Japanese artist.

Watch seemingly random lines of paint take form and come to life before your very eyes on a 3 meter-long, superlarge canvas as Risa whirls around the stage, effortlessly pulling off fluid street-dance moves while painting. She’ll also be doing some caricatures while she’s at it, so raise your hand!

Colorhythm RisaBIOGRAPHY

Colorhythm Risa began her art-dance performances in 2012 – first as part of a group then later on as a solo act. Her performances, both in name and in style, are a portmanteau of “colour” and “rhythm” and have won her accolades and even an award at a 2014 art competition. Her HYPER JAPAN Festival 2016 performances will mark her UK debut.

Create Your Own “Kokeshi” Doll

Japanese “Kokeshi” Dolls purportedly came into being during Japan’s Edo perod (1600–1868), and were originally sold as souvenirs to travellers visiting hot springs in the North-East of the country (the modern Miyagi prefecture), a trend that continues to this day. While we sadly don’t boast hot springs at this year’s HYPER JAPAN Festival, one of our popular Creative Studio activities from our Christmas Market returns as we’ll have a hands-on DIY kokeshi decorating workshop!

Kokeshi_exhibit_at_Seattle_Nihon_Go_Gakko_02Among kokeshi types, the “Naruko” Kokeshi is the most common, with the main street of in Miyagi Prefecture’s Naruko Onsen Village being known as “Kokeshi Street” due to the many artisans and sellers! However, other styles and even “Creative” kokeshi also exist, not bound by any particular traditional design. Like all souvenirs, kokeshi are well-suited to being given as gifts, and exchanging kokeshi with a hand-written message as a token of friendship is not uncommon. If you’re stuck for what to give the Japanophile in your life this holiday season, consider making them one of these hand-made, one-off traditional Japanese craft gifts!

Paint Your Own “Kitsune” Fox Mask

kitsuneworkshopThis Christmas we’re bringing back a smash hit activity, offering visitors the opportunity to paint their own “kitsune” fox mask as part of our HYPER Creative Studio! While the UK’s most famous fox is probably Basil Brush, Japan’s kitsune have a long and storied background in folklore. These masks are inspired by those appearing in Japanese “Noh” theatre, and will make for a lovely hand-finished gift, or to be kept as a memento of one’s time at HYPER JAPAN.

Inari-kitsuneWhile Pokemon and Naruto fans will recognise the nine-tailed fox spirit, these are just very recent takes on a staple of Japanese myth, and most recently the band BABYMETAL have also associated themselves with the kitsune motif, both visually and in their lyrics. Intelligent trickster spirits, kitsune are known for being seductive shapeshifters who trick and confound men, although they can be as good an omen as they are ill. In mythology, white kitsune in particular (like the ones these masks represent) are the messenger servants of the deity Inari, appearing as protectors with the power to ward off evil spirits. Whatever your interpretation of the kitsune myth, you can have fun making one of these masks for either your own collection of cool J-culture items, or as a gift for a loved one.

HYPER JAPAN Christmas Market 2015, Day 3!

As with all good things in life, even Christmas Market must come to an end. The Friday and Saturday sessions were certainly amazing and full of memorable moments, but Sunday had its fair share!

The Sushi Awards 2015 saw five sushi houses send their top talent to vie to take home the title of “Sushi of the Year”. “Tosho“, “The Spicy Crunch“, “Tuna ‘Toro’ Gunkan“, “Maki Sabroso“, and “Snow Drop“, these sushi shocked many visitors with their ingenuity and depth of flavour, and no doubt opened new areas for sushi fans to explore!

On the Live.Japan Stage, LadyBaby certainly had their cake and ate it too! A real cake, as one of the girls, Rei Kuromiya, just celebrated her birthday! There was a surprise birthday cake and singing for her by their UK fans and friends too!

All in all it’s been a wonderful few days with Japanese action aplenty, and for everybody should feel proud that they didn’t let the cold winter weather beat them! But we’re not done yet! The HYPER JAPAN Festival 2016 is but a few months away, and will be gracing the Olympia Grand from the 15th to the 17th of July next year! It will be a huge upscale from the last time HYPER JAPAN was in Olympia London. Tickets go on sale as early as late February, so keen beans can grab their tickets early and can relax in the knowledge that HYPER fun times will be back before long.

HYPER JAPAN Festival 2016

One last note, we’d love your feedback as always so please take a minute or two out to fill in our post-event surveys! Your suggestions can help shape the future of HYPER JAPAN and exactly which of Japan’s best cultural offerings we share with the UK.
The first survey link will take you to the pop questionnaire, which will help us find our guests for next year’s HYPER JAPAN Festival 2016. The second link is for a general questionnaire, about HYPER JAPAN in general.

GENERAL QUESTIONNAIRE

HYPER JAPAN Christmas Market 2015, Day 2!

It’s hard to believe that Saturday and its two sessions have come and gone. With plenty of content to heat up the Tobacco Dock and beat back the cold, it’s been a whirlwind of a day. With so much that happened today, where to start the recap?

The eat TOKYO Sushi Bar has now closed its doors after a full two days of serving up freshly prepared sushi. But worry not! While the Sushi Bar may have closed its doors, the Sushi Awards 2015 will be taking its place on Sunday! This means that not only will there be some simply divine sushi, five great sushi houses will be sending their chefs to prepare the sushi in front of you. Oh, and did we mention that all five sushi creations are totally original and created for this event?

The Tokyu Hands X HYPER JAPAN Gift Collection certainly caused a stir as people explored the full range of goods from Japan. The on-the-rim-of-your-teacup figurines were quite popular, even if some people didn’t quite know what to make of them. Other, more practical products – like the bento lunch boxes and the character face masks – enjoyed a similar popularity. The selection is admittedly rather eclectic but in its own way presents a neat encapsulation of what Japan is.

sat_minori

On the Live.Japan stage, MINORI was a vision of Victorian elegance in full regalia and shironuri makeup. As no doubt many in the audience were experiencing shironuri for the first time, her unwavering passion for her chosen art impacted many and left an impression. Her frequent tips and advice also had many fans scribbling madly in their noteboks and typing away on their mobile screens. Sunday participants will be pleased to note that she will be making an appearance at the Sunday J-STYLE Fashion show as a special guest.

As for tickets, ticket sales will end Sunday morning at 7AM, so if you haven’t yet, make sure you get your tickets! Tickets will still be available on the door for the Sunday session. Tomorrow will be the final session of HYPER JAPAN Christmas Market 2015, so if you haven’t already, make plans to come on down and join the fun!

edoanime1803: Magical “Utsushi-e”

Note: This page is from a previous year’s HYPER JAPAN Christmas Market event, please see our schedule for an up-to-date list of performances and activities.

edo1“Utsushi-e” is a form of animation that first appeared over 200 years ago in Edo (Tokyo). While little more than a series of of glass slides set in front of a crude candle projector, the result was nevertheless a spectacle the likes of which the Japanese people had never seen before. Now, after more than 200 years since the first show was performed, HYPER JAPAN Christmas Market will play host to the UK’s very first performance of utsushi-e at the Live.Japan stage, performed by Minzawa.

Magic LanternShowing will be the 1929 masterpiece “Kobutori” (lit: “plump”) which was directed by the visionary director Yasuji Murata. Also showing will be “Akai Rosoku To Ningyo” (“The Mermaid and the Red Candle”) by children’s storybook writer Mimei Ogawa. These two works of art will surely warm the heart of any anime fan with their retro feel and warm lines.

As a special feature, the stylish Samurai musical drama “Samurai Opera” will also be shown. This short 20-minute feature combines traditional samurai storylines with English-language opera, making for a slightly odd yet delightful, and definitely humurous experience.

Minzawa
An artistic group formed in 1968, Minzawa has been entertaining children and adults alike across the Japanese archipelago with their productions of shadow puppetry, “utsushi-e” and other traditional forms of Japanese theatre. Dedicated to supporting the traditional arts, the group is focused on using and keeping alive the traditional methods.

Nihon Buyo: Classical Japanese Dance

Note: This page is from a previous year’s HYPER JAPAN Christmas Market event, please see our schedule for an up-to-date list of performances and activities.

A stunning performance of classical Japanese dance from Hiroko Tanaka and her Hiroko Tanaka Nihon Buyo Group, guaranteed to bring a gracefulness and elegance rarely seen outside Japan to the J-Culture showcase stage.

Nihon Buyo (buyo means dance) is a refined form of traditional Japanese dance and has been improved over four centuries. It was designed to perform on stage. Nihon Buyo is most strongly influenced by Kabuki buyo, but it was also influenced by Noh and folk dance. It takes circular movements and props from Noh, and spinning and jumping expressions from traditional folk dance. Major schools of Nihon Buyo are the Nishikawa, Fujima, Bando, Hanayagi, and Wakayagi schools, but new, smaller schools have been added more recently.

Hiroko Tanaka Nihon Buyo Group
img_tanakaHiroko Tanaka began learning Nihon Buyo at the age of 6 in Kyoto, where she was born and raised, and has been dancing for nearly 60 years. She has been teaching this elegant Japanese dance form Nihon Buyo in London since 2003. Her students are a mix of various backgrounds and nationalities ranging from office workers and business people to chefs and actresses. The students showcase their skills in twice yearly reviews and are proud to be able showcase their skills at public events.

Okinawa “Buku Buku” Tea Ceremony

Note: This page is from a previous year’s HYPER JAPAN Christmas Market event, please see our schedule for an up-to-date list of performances and activities.

OkRyukyu Teainawa is a unique and quite mysterious place within Japan, with a distinct culture and proud heritage of its own. Fortunately, to share some of Okinawa’s unique culture, the “Ryukyu Buku Buku Tea Ceremony Akeshinono Kai” association will be taking to the J-Culture stage for a demonstration of Okinawa’s unique tea ceremony. Distinctly unique from Japanese tea ceremony, this is an opportunity seldom chanced upon outside Japan – seldom witnessed even within Japan.

Okinawan buku buku tea differs from Japanese tea both in taste and appearance. Consisting of a blend of green tea and jasmine tea, it is much more mild than the somewhat bitter tea drunken in Japanese tea ceremony. Visually stunning, buku buku tea has a mound of white froth, made from roasted rice and water, towering above the cup. While the result looks more like a sundae than a cup of tea, it is a pleasant and mild drink. Witness the beautiful outfits worn by practitioners of Ryukyu buku buku tea as they go about the precise steps required to make this most unusual yet most fantastic drink.

Ryukyu Buku Buku Tea Ceremony Akeshinono Kai
Ms. Yukiko Raho has been a member of the Ryukyu Buku Buku Tea Ceremony Akeshinono Kai since 2008, and has since then participated in numerous Okinawa Day festivals where she demonstrated Ryukyu tea ceremony in front of appreciative crowds. Currently active in setting up the London branch of the Akeshinono Kai, Ms. Raho is slowly yet surely introducing the UK to the delights of Ryukyu tea, one cup at a time.

With golden noodles shimmering in the steam rising from a thick (or thin!) broth with topping of your choice piled up high, it is the perfect answer to an empty stomach. Given this vision of perfection, it’s no wonder that ramen consistently ranks high on any foodie’s eat-list. To that end, HYPER Creative Studio is pleased to announce a partnership with Ippudo Ramen to bring you a one-of-a-kind ramen workshop, Ramen 101, where experts will guide you
through the history of hakata-style tonkotsu ramen and the ins and outs of this delectable dish in a very easy to …ahem… digest manner.

The first half of the workshop will have participants work their way through tonkotsu ramen’s background, from its humble origins to its many present incarnations including Ippudo’s own signature broth. Characteristics of tonkotsu ramen, its differences from other types of ramen, toppings and combinations, the kaedama system – all will be explained! The second half will be more hands-on, with participants practising the “yu-kiri” process. A vital and unique process in the ramen-making procedure, “yu-kiri” is where the ramen, once removed from boiling water, is sharply shaken to remove excess water. Once mastered the art of “yu-kiri”, participants will move on to the crowning moment of the workshop, ramen tasting! Taking all the knowledge gained during the workshop, participants will taste the subtle flavours of the tonkotsu broth, ponder the chewiness of the noodles, and analyse the interplay of flavours from various toppings.

Please note that all Creative Studio activities have a limit of 50 participants, operating on a first-come, first-served basis.

Ikebana: Japanese flower arrangement

ikebanaThe Japanese art of flower arrangement, ikebana is much, much more than the simple act of arranging flowers. Through the arrangement of flowers, practitioners of ikebana feel a sense of closeness with nature, all the while contemplating the simple beauty of a flower. Many professionals practice ikebana in silence, as contemplation and meditation are closely related disciplines. We are happy to announce that ikebana will once again be on the schedule for the Creative Studio.

This workshop will focus on finding and drawing out the inherent beauty in nature through artistic arrangements using seasonal flora. Organised under the careful tutelage of Ms. Hanako Motoya, ikebana practitioner of the Ohara school, the workshop will be a gentle guide to the Japanese approach to flower arrangement. Participants are encouraged to take the flowers of their arrangement home and practice some of the techniques from the workshop.

HANAKO MOTOYA
profile_shotMs. Hanako Motoya has had a lifelong passion for flowers, having first been introduced to flower arrangement by her mother before going on to study flower arrangement at university. This passion only grew after graduation, with her starting work as a floral designer for an exhibition and display company. In her search for more knowledge and greater experience, Ms. Motoya began working at a florist, and it was through her work there that she was introduced to the Ohara school of ikebana. After almost ten years of devoted study and work involving flowers and ikebana, she arrived in the UK in 2008 to start her own flower business. Currently, Ms. Motoya conducts a monthly ikebana class open to ikebana enthusiasts and flower novices alike.
