Tech

From the Walkman to robots, Japanese technology has become synonymous with innovation and quality. The country that pioneered the electric toilet has also been responsible for some of the most popular entertainment systems of all time, and there are countless everyday tools we take for granted which originated in Japan.

This year, we’re on the cutting edge of Japanese culture with Opera AOI, where traditional Japanese Bunraku puppets are given voices by Yamaha’s VOCALOID software in a modern retelling of a chapter of the famous “Genji Monogatari”! A film without actors, an opera without singers, this is Japanese technology and tradition in perfect fusion.

Japan also excels at producing small everyday gadgets to accommodate any need. Air conditioned trousers, smiley face iPhone chargers and pet emergency evacuation jackets are just some of the latest must-have items for any discerning technophile. Inamo’s E-Table, the future of eating out, was another amazing display last year!

It’s another double-bill of robotics this year, as we welcome guests ITK and Robot Garage. As technology develops, robotic capabilities are growing ever more impressive, and some predict that the day when robots may be seen as carers, workers, and even companions is not too far away. Until that day comes however, we can enjoy watching robots capable of taking part in dance contests, kicking balls, and making eerily human facial expressions. This year sees Robot Garage’s Professor Takahashi introducing the amazing robot Hirata, brother unit of Kirobo, the communication robot on board the International Space Station!
