Acclaimed film director MAMORU HOSODA’s 2009 hit anime film “Summer Wars” (サマーウォーズ) will be front and centre at HYPER JAPAN’s Anime Film Night on Saturday, 14 July from 19:00!
Get your fill of both sci-fi and anime in this whimsical anime film, right on the front lines between digital and reality. A confrontation of the real world with the digital world OZ, which is the mirror world to reality. Although digital, a foe character is the one who violates the public, and people use the “human network” to fight against such a foe, which have a strong meaning in present day Japan where digital natives are now the mainstream.
STUDIO CHIZU’s 2015 anime masterpiece “The Boy and the Beast” (バケモノの子) will be the feature of HYPER JAPAN’s Anime Film Night on Friday, 13 July from 17:45!
Enjoy this delightful coming-of-age animated film as a ‘human child’ and ‘middle aged beast,’ both from completely different worlds but both alone, choose to become master and disciple. As the two give themselves away to each other, changes occur not only between themselves, but to the world and people around them.
MAMORU HOSODA
Born in Toyama in 1967. After graduating Kanazawa College of Art, Hosoda joined Toei Doga (now Toei Animation Co., Ltd) as an animator. In 1997, he made his debut as a director with the popular TV animation series GeGeGe no Kitaro (4th series), and in 1999, he directed his first theatrical animated film Digimon Adventure. He won acclaim for the advanced concept of his second film Digimon Adventure OUR WAR GAME!! (00). He turned freelance thereafter, and in 2006, he released the feature animation The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (original novel by Yasutaka Tsutsui) which turned out to be a long-running box office hit, then Hosoda had been regarded as a promising director. In 2009, he directed Summer Wars, which is the first film made by his original story. In 2011, he established his own animated film studio named Studio Chizu, and released Wolf Children (2012) and The Boy and the Beast (2015) which were highly acclaimed domestically and internationally. His new film, Mirai is scheduled to be released in 2018 summer.
Olympia London is a member of the Association of Event Venues (AEV) and has adopted the latest policies regarding weapons at events. In particular, changes involving exhibiting and purchasing weapons. The following excerpt is from Section 58.7 of the eGuide.
Where weapons are exhibited:
The exhibitor’s risk assessment should address pre-sale demonstrations and handling of weapons by customers, e.g. sales should be made on a one-to-one basis and not in crowded areas.
The venue may request details of the exhibitor’s trading company, in order to verify that the business is legitimate.
Sold items must be forwarded to customers after the event.
Exhibitors should retain a record of each customer until the end of the event open day, after which their details should be destroyed.
It is recommended that exhibitors request appropriate photographic identification from customers appearing to be under 21, in order to ensure compliance with minimum age legal requirements.
Knives displayed on stands must be encapsulated in protective packaging or kept in enclosed cabinets, so that blades cannot be touched by the public.
While replica weapons will be sold at HYPER JAPAN, there are certain rules that everybody will need to follow.
Sales of Replica Weapons
Metal replica weapons will be available for purchase at HYPER JAPAN.
Any individual wishing to purchase a replica weapon will be required to undergo a standardised check which includes but is not limited to age verification.
Customers will have their purchases delivered to their home addresses after the event.
“Items which do not have a potential to cause harm, but look realistic and have the potential to cause alarm”, such as foam swords, will also be available to buy over the counter at the event. Any such items should remain in their supplied packaging while in the venue.
Purchased Replica Weapons
Should you wish to take your purchased item out of the packaging, event security must authorise your continued entry to HYPER JAPAN with the item. If approved, you may remove the item from the supplied packaging.
Following Olympia counsel, we recently announced some updated rules regarding cosplay props. Meanwhile, we’ve been listening to your various opinions and have been in ongoing negotiations with Olympia. As a result, we’ve been able to work out some updated rules and regulations for cosplay props which we believe will make everyone’s experience at HYPER JAPAN the best possible.
Not allowed:
Firearms
Zombie blades
Realistic-looking replica guns
Realistic metal weapons
Props and/or weapons with sharp edges
Bokken (Wooden swords)
Wooden Staffs
Bows and crossbows
Unsecured whips
Pyrotechnics/explosives
Allowed:
Soft/foam/cardboard non-realistic weapons
Toy weapons (think Jedi lightsaber, or a Splatoon Inkling Splattershot Blaster)
Wooden Wizard wands
At the Door
Event security at the visitor entrances will be determining which props will be allowed into the event. Please understand if security err on the side of caution and do not allow your prop inside the event, but security have the right to ban items as part of our entry process.
If your prop is not allowed into the event, you will be guided to a safe store room where your prop will be stored until you leave the event
What to consider:
Does it look real?
Does it look dangerous?
Does it have the potential to cause harm (intentionally or not intentionally)?
Could it be intimidating, or confusing to members of the public?
Not everyone knows about cosplay so please keep ALL props covered on the way to Olympia, as well as when going home.
There will be ZERO tolerance for anyone found to be intimidating the public with a replica weapon.
We want HYPER JAPAN to be a great event for all and as these are rules will be tightly followed at the event, please make sure to read them carefully!

Our fantastic audience have had some brilliant suggestions over the years and we try and listen to EVERY SINGLE ONE.
This is one of them! In July we’re creating a brand new space – a kawaii community area. Where you guys can make the content for each other for FREE!
Fans can book 40-minute slots and do as they wish! Organise a meet-up or promote a community group, showcase your made-with-love hand-crafted outfits or run a tutorial!
Restrictions do apply. Special treatments, such as nail art and make-up tutorials will require risk assessments and insurance cover. In this case, please apply detailing your idea and a member of the team will be in touch.
Space includes 1 table and several chairs.
A schedule will be announced and updated on the website!
