The most exciting Christmas event in London kicked off with a bang today, as Tobacco Dock was filled with visitors eager to take in the cultural sights and sounds of HYPER JAPAN, taste some Japanese eats, and, of course, get their hands on some unique Christmas gifts! In case you missed it, we’ll share some of the highlights:
Starting with HYPER JAPAN’s first School’s Day! In which we had local Shadwell primary school students engaging in Japanese storytelling performed by Oxford Brookes University Japanese Studies students! A fun and engaging afternoon of activities to engage young people in all aspects of Japanese culture. We look forward to hosting this again!
Going on to the visually stunning, the Illuminight “akari” lantern installation treated visitors to the best display of this style of Japanese craft art that you’ll encounter outside of Japan. Remember that all HYPER JAPAN visitors are able to see this exhibition, so if you’re joining us tomorrow or Sunday you owe it to yourself to check it out. Those who wanted a more hands-on experience were even able to join in with the goldfish lantern decoration or cutout workshops, with the masters at our Creative Studio. These are running again on Saturday and Sunday, with tickets just £7 for adults and £5 for under-10s.
Smoothly seguing from modern takes on traditional art, to that of pop culture! Dai Nippon Printing Co. bought the “The World of Fairy Tail” exhibition which delighted fans of anime & manga with original artwork from the international hit series. Even including photo spot for those looking to take a selfie to commemorate the precious memory as well as books and art prints for those seeking a tangible piece of the experience to take home.
Foodies, too, were well-catered for as our inaugural RAMEN EXPERIENCE kicked off today! This brand new addition to the HYPER JAPAN family of festive food fun featured 4 flavoursome soup bases, which visitors can sample before choosing their favourite to enjoy with a personalised bowl of ramen. If delicious soup noodle sounds like your idea of a good time in the nippy winter weather, tickets are still available to pre-book for Sunday as of this writing.
Our Food Court was, as always, another source of delicious Japanese edibles, with exhibitors such as Kome Donburi House and Juzu serving up a selection of Japanese food unlike any other in the UK. Speaking of exhibitors, Christmas shoppers were able to fill up on stocking stuffers and sneaky treats for themselves with big names like JPU Records and Tofu Cute supplying J-pop and Kawaii goods, and others offering an array of more traditional items.
Last but not least, our world-class stage performances rocked Tobacco Dock and all who attended today; FEMM showed off songs from their brand new album, while MUTANT MONSTER returned to the UK and brought their own brand of punk rock back to our excited audience! Both groups (and more!) are back on stage tomorrow and Sunday, so there’s still time to catch an amazing show.
As much as we wish the fun could last forever, it’s time to say farewell to another wonderful HYPER JAPAN event as our Christmas Market has come to a close. With powerful stage performances, the Illuminight installation sharing the magic of a collection of curated Japanese craft arts, incredible edibles and more, we’ve enjoyed bringing you this taste of Japan in the UK once again this winter!
Cosplayers showed us their dedication to their craft and fandom by taking part in our COSTest, HYPER JAPAN’s very own competitive Cosplay event, dazzling audiences with their hand-crafted homages to their favourite characters. Judges had a hard time with the stiff competition, but were eventually able to crown one clear winner!
Weeks of contesting ideas came to a head as the Kikkoman HYPER Sandwich Competition saw the selected Shoyu sandwich ideas from our social media suggestions go head-to-head, as reimagined by professionals! The real winners were the audience, who got to sample each of these creations and vote for their favourites alongside a panel of judges. On a similarly delicious note, our Ramen Experience warmed the hearts (and stomachs!) of participating visitors, who each voted for their favourite Japanese soup noodle base from samples before enjoying their choice with some satisfying ramen.
The exhibitor side of proceedings was superlatively satisfied by our stalls full of sellers, exhibitors such as Wagashi Japanese bakery and JP Books helping visitors with finding that unique Christmas Gift or special Japanese snack, to say nothing of all the happy shoppers indulging their own Japanophile interests!
Last but not least by any stretch of the imagination, our stage was host to an incredible range of acts, with punk rockers MUTANT MONSTER and metalheads LOVEBITES amazing crowds with their performances across the afternoon. The weekend’s festivities finally came to a close as master Rakugo storyteller Katsura Sunshine rocked the audience with laughter!
Last but not least, we’ve confirmed the date and location for HYPER JAPAN Festival 2018! We’d like to thank you for coming, and we’ll see you next Summer!
We’re now more than halfway through the UK’s premier Japanese food & culture event, and the excitement was overflowing, despite the winter chill, as the best Japanese food, music, culture and shopping once more delighted our visitors!
Participants in S&B’s Deco Curry workshop were shown how to make this warming wonder into a chara-ben style bit of cute cooking. Everyone who participated in the workshop were given samples of S&B curry to take home and you can keep an eye out for their creations with the hashtags #LoveSBCurry #HYPERJAPAN.
Speaking of Japanese food, exhibitors like Japan Centre were supplying visitors with the Japanese snacks and goods that they craved, from Pocky to posters and from melon-pan to manga. For those hungrier for fashion than foodstuffs, exhibitors like Aoi Clothing and Dreamy Bows had accessories and outré outfits galore!
Keeping with the fashion trend, our J-Style Fashion show lit up the stage with all the aplomb audiences have come to expect, models strutting their stylistic stuff to awe our visitors and inspire their own ensembles. In our second session, powerful fashion statements gave way to the powerful metal sound of LOVEBITES, the all-female Japanese metal sensation who made a huge splash with their first overseas performance, live on our HYPER Live stage! Both our Fashion show and LOVEBITES will be returning to our stage on Sunday as well.
Our Creative Studio hosted an incredible Ikebana workshop by the Ohara School’s England chapter, where intrepid florists could get to grips with this traditional Japanese art. If that sounds like your kind of thing, don’t fret, as there is another workshop tomorrow! Visitors were also able to enjoy a more modern twist on traditional Japanese art at our Digital Ukiyo-e gallery, bringing the aesthetic of the floating world to our event on full colour displays. On top of this, the Illuminight installation and workshops were another amazing showcase of Japanese craft arts.
Last but not least, some of our visitors helped beat the winter chill with a sampling of the tastiest Japanese tipples at our Sake Cocktail Awards! Each participating visitor was able to taste and then vote for their favourite from three incredible offerings by select mixologists, with the winner crowned based on their choices. If you missed out today, there are still tickets available tomorrow for £5 per person.

Fresh off successful run on the West End, this dynamic comic takes traditional Japanese comedy tales and performs them for an English speaking audience, to hilarious effect.
